How to Use This Book
Whether you have just picked one up at a market, are considering adding singing bowls to your healing practice, or simply love their sound and want to learn more, this book is written for you.
You don’t need any musical background. Everything is explained in clear and practical language. Technical details appear only when they genuinely help. If something feels complex, take your time to understand it. The bowls themselves will teach you as much as these pages can.
The chapters unfold in a natural progression from first experience to confident practice. The opening chapters introduce the basics of playing a singing bowl and exploring sound through technical tools such as tuners, heart rate variability (HRV), and electroencephalography (EEG). From there, the book examines how both metal and crystal bowls are made, their history, and the acoustic principles that shape their sound.
Once this foundation has been established, the focus turns to healing. You will explore ideas that are supported by experience and research, what remains uncertain, and some of the common myths and misconceptions surrounding sound healing. The later chapters guide you through choosing bowls, creating safe and supportive spaces, and applying singing bowls in a variety of practical settings. Finally, the book concludes with caring for your bowls and reflecting on the role sound can play in a lifelong practice.
Along the way, you will also encounter Reflection Exercises. Some invite you to listen more closely, some to play the singing bowl in new ways, and others to notice how sound moves through your body or transforms a space. They are not tests; they are invitations. Do them as written, adapt them, or simply imagine them.
You may notice some information repeated across chapters. This is intentional. Some readers may wish to dip in and out rather than read straight through, so repetition ensures that wherever you land, the key points are there for you.
Most importantly, remember that singing bowls are not about perfection. You don’t need to chase the right frequency or memorise every fact before you begin. Start simple. Play a bowl. Listen. Notice what happens in you and around you. Everything else will come in its own time.
